Mahidol University is one of Thailand's leading institutions of higher education, renowned for medicine, science, and research. Its Phayathai Campus, located in the heart of Bangkok, houses several of the university's most important health science faculties. Whether you're a student, a parent, or someone visiting on official business, chances are you'll find yourself in this part of the city at some point.
The History of Mahidol University
Mahidol University traces its roots back to the royal patronage of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who founded Siriraj Hospital in 1888. Medical instruction began there in 1890 under the name "Rongrian Phaetthayakon" (School of Medicine), making it one of Thailand's oldest institutions of higher learning.
In 1943, the "University of Medical Sciences" was officially established, bringing the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital under its wing. Then in 1969, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously bestowed upon the university its new name, "Mahidol University," in honor of Prince Mahidol of Songkla, revered as the "Father of Modern Medicine in Thailand."
Today, Mahidol University spans six campuses: Salaya (the main campus), Bangkoknoi, Phayathai, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan, and Amnat Charoen, offering more than 500 academic programs.
