The history of UTCC: from College of Commerce to university
Unlike most universities, UTCC's story includes a foundation, a wartime closure and a full revival.
The beginning in 1940
The institution was first established in 1940 at the office of the Thai Chamber of Commerce in the Phanit Phan building on Si Ayutthaya Road, Sanam Suea Pa, under the name "College of Commerce." It accepted graduates of Mathayom 6 into six-month and two-year programmes, enrolled around 300 students, and modelled its curriculum on that of the London Chamber of Commerce — remarkably modern for its time.
It is a pleasing coincidence that the university was born on Si Ayutthaya Road, the very street where The Victory Bangkok Hotel stands today.
Interrupted by war
The college operated for only a year before the Greater East Asia War forced it to close, as the government required the premises for the Thai–Japanese liaison office. It remained closed for around 22 years.
Revival in 1963
Successive Chamber of Commerce committees worked to bring the college back, succeeding in 1963. It reopened under the same name at the Chamber's premises at 150 Ratchabophit Road, accepting upper-secondary graduates into a three-year programme leading to a higher certificate in commerce.
