Suan Rommaninat: The Old Prison That Became Bangkok's Wellness Park

Suan Rommaninat: The Old Prison That Became Bangkok's Wellness Park

Tucked away in the historic Phra Nakhon district, Suan Rommaninat is one of Bangkok's more unexpected green spaces. Once the grounds of a downtown prison, it has since been reborn as a shaded, walkable park where locals jog, stretch, and unwind — a quiet counterpoint to the busy streets surrounding it.

A Park Built From a Prison's History

The park stands on the former site of the Bangkok Special Prison, which dated back to the reign of King Rama V. In 1991, the Thai cabinet approved a plan to relocate inmates to the Klong Prem Central Prison, freeing up the old grounds. The following year, in 1992, the site was transformed into a public park dedicated to Queen Sirikit on the occasion of her 60th birthday, and it was given the name "Rommaninat," meaning "she who is a refuge."

That history is still visible today: sections of the original prison wall have been preserved within the park, standing alongside the mature trees that now shade its pathways — a quiet reminder of how the space has been reclaimed for the public.

Location and How to Get There

Suan Rommaninat sits on Maha Chai Road in the Samran Rat subdistrict of Phra Nakhon, open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The easiest way in is via the MRT, getting off at Sam Yot station and walking a short distance, though bus routes 8, 47, 59, and 509 also pass nearby. Its Old Town location puts it within easy reach of landmarks like Wat Suthat, the City Pillar Shrine, and Bangkok's Chinatown.

What to Do Inside the Park

Running Track and Outdoor Fitness

At its core, Suan Rommaninat is a wellness park. A roughly 700-meter loop circles the grounds, lined with outdoor exercise equipment, and there are free-to-use basketball courts, a futsal pitch, and a petanque court for anyone looking to get active.

A Relaxed Spot for Families

Families will find a playground and a skate park alongside wide, shaded lawns that are ideal for a weekend picnic. Keep an eye out for the park's resident squirrels darting between the older trees — a small detail that visitors often mention.

The Bronze Conch Sculpture and Corrections Museum

The park's centerpiece is a bronze conch sculpture set at its highest point, rising from a fountain pool built to honor the Queen. Nearby, history enthusiasts can step into the Corrections Museum, which has documented Thailand's prison history since 1939 and sits within the same grounds.
