Siriraj Medical Museum: The Complete Visitor's Guide (and Where to Stay)

Looking for something in Bangkok that goes beyond temples and shopping malls? Siriraj Medical Museum is one of the city's most fascinating — and most talked-about — attractions. Travellers often call it the "Museum of Death" because it displays real human specimens, preserved organs and forensic evidence. Behind the shock value, though, lies more than a century of Thai medical history.
This guide covers everything you need before you go: the must-see galleries, opening hours, ticket prices, how to get there, and how to choose a hotel in Bangkok that keeps your trip smooth from start to finish.
About Siriraj Medical Museum
The museum sits inside Siriraj Hospital on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya River. Founded in 1888 under King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), Siriraj was Thailand's very first hospital.
Each gallery began life as a teaching collection for a department of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. Over time, the collections were brought together and opened to the public. Today they are housed in the Adulyadej Vikrom Building within the hospital grounds.
Must-See Galleries
Congdon Anatomical Museum
A detailed look at the human body, from internal organ systems and the nervous system to the stages of foetal development. The gallery honours Professor Edgar Davidson Congdon, who laid the foundations of anatomy teaching at Siriraj.
Ellis Pathological Museum
Organs affected by disease and specimens of congenital conditions. It's the gallery that most clearly shows how illness changes the body — and why looking after your health matters.
Songkran Niyomsane Forensic Medicine Museum
The best-known gallery and the source of the "Museum of Death" nickname. It displays evidence from real cases, weapons and examples of injuries that help forensic doctors solve crimes. For decades it also displayed the body of the notorious "Si Ui", which has since been removed and cremated.
Parasitology Museum
Parasites found in people in Thailand, along with their life cycles and how to prevent infection. A little stomach-turning, but genuinely useful knowledge.
Sood Sangvichien Prehistoric Museum & Laboratory
The story of prehistoric people in what is now Thailand, told through excavated skeletons and artefacts — ideal for anyone interested in history and anthropology.
