Phaya Thai Palace: History, Highlights, Visiting Tips and the Best Hotel Near Phaya Thai Palace

Just off busy Ratchawithi Road, a graceful European-style palace sits in quiet contrast to the city around it. Phaya Thai Palace was once the residence of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), and its arches, towers and stucco details still tell the story of Siam in an age of change. If you are planning a visit and looking for a hotel near Phaya Thai Palace, this guide covers everything you need in one place.

Discover Phaya Thai Palace, the Palace of King Rama VI

From King Rama V's Residence to King Rama VI's Palace

The Phaya Thai fields were originally used by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) for experimental rice farming and gardens. Around 1909 he commissioned a royal residence here, but stayed only briefly before his passing. Queen Saovabha Phongsri later resided at the palace until her death.

King Rama VI then renovated the site and built several new halls, keeping the original Devaraja Sabharamaya Hall, and named it the Royal Phaya Thai Palace. He lived here until the final years of his reign.

A Luxury Hotel, an Early Radio Station and Phramongkutklao Hospital

The palace's story continued long after it served as a royal residence. Under King Rama VII it became the Phya Thai Palace Hotel, one of the most luxurious hotels of its time, and it was also home to one of Thailand's earliest radio broadcasting stations. Today the palace stands within the grounds of Phramongkutklao Hospital and is cared for by the Phyathai Palace Foundation.

Highlights You Should Not Miss

Phiman Chakri Hall

The principal hall, recognisable by its tower and steep roofs, blends Romanesque and Gothic influences. Its rooms reflect the personal tastes of King Rama VI.

Devaraja Sabharamaya Hall

This elegant green-and-white building is the only hall surviving from the palace's earliest period. It once served as an audience hall for ceremonies and performances.

Waikunthep Hall and the Roman Garden

Connected to Phiman Chakri Hall, this area opens onto a European-style garden planted with tropical species, one of the palace's most photographed spots. Photography may be restricted inside some rooms.

Café de Norasingha

Set in a neoclassical building in front of Phiman Chakri Hall, this former waiting room for royal audiences is now a vintage café, often described as one of the oldest coffee shops in Thailand. It is a lovely place to rest after the tour; bringing cash is recommended.
